For 14 years (and counting), one of our longest-standing volunteer groups continue to serve as Guest Chefs at Ronald McDonald House New Mexico kitchens. Ronnie’s Angels is made up of nine hospitable women with a shared passion for giving back to the community.
Learn more about their unique volunteer journey, motivation to make a difference, and special memories from the Yale and Highlands Houses over the years.
What has kept you motivated to make a difference through the Guest Chef program?
“Our motivation stems from providing care through preparing a healthy meal for families who spend long and difficult days at the hospital with their children who are facing serious medical issues. The Ronald McDonald House mission resonates with us, and we love interacting with families. We always feel valued by the kind thank you notes they often leave us.”
Do you have any favorite volunteer memories with Ronald McDonald House?
“One of the most memorable days was at the Yale House kitchen when a father thanked us for the meals we cooked. He shared that his wife and quadruplets had been in the hospital for a long time as they were born prematurely. Later that evening, he brought in three strollers to share his excitement that they were being discharged (one child was still in the NICU). One of our group members spoke Spanish and helped us communicate, but we could feel his joy even through the language barrier. We were happy to take a picture of all of us together as they left the House.
Another favorite memory was organizing and setting up the new kitchen for the Highlands House opening. It was a thrill to learn we were going to have a beautiful new facility for deserving families and a new kitchen to cook in for them. We recently had fun shopping at a local restaurant supply store to add cooking tools and supplies we felt needed to be replenished at both Houses.”
What is the most rewarding part of being a Guest Chef?
“As Guest Chefs, we immediately see that the families appreciate our home-cooked comfort food, and we get to hear their stories. The camaraderie we have developed as a team is a true gift. We are passionate about making healthy meals and have continued to perfect our skills of cooking for large groups (a typical dinner serves 60-70 people) and everyone one the team trades roles so we are interchangeable.”
What would you tell someone considering volunteering with us?
“You get more than you give. Every month as we walk to our cars after cooking, we leave with a happy heart. Plus, it is a fun evening with friends to create recipes, cook large meals, and know you’ve had a meaningful hand in helping a family in need. The more you do it, the easier it gets.”
